Cinco de Mayo celebrates the Mexican win at the Battle of Puebla against France. This day is often mistaken as Mexico’s Independence day which is actually September 16. Nevertheless, it has become a tradition in the United States to celebrate on May 5th. There are many parties and lots of drinking.

For this year’s Cinco de Mayo party, consider putting together a festive Cinco de Mayo gift basket as a host gift or even just to make someone’s day. Simply combine a few fresh fruits, gourmet foods, a bottle of spirits, or grand cheese and you have the perfect gift. If you are throwing the party, a basket makes a good raffle gift as well.

How to Create the Perfect Basket

One of the first things you need to decide is how big you want the basket. It could be a huge basket to share with others, or it can be a small gift for one person. The easiest and cheapest way to do this is to get organizational baskets at your local Dollar Tree. Alternatively, you can use a beautiful wood basket or an old-world style feel. The trick to big baskets is to make sure you have enough goodies to make it really full.

You can also get someone as small as one margarita glass – plastic or glass. All you have to do is place a little shot glass, a mini bottle of tequila, and a lemon inside the glass.

Don’t forget to also get paper filler for the bottom of the basket (the more colorful the better) and a gift basket plastic wrap.

Festive Cinco De Mayo Gift Baskets

It’s best to put together a gift basket that has a cohesive theme. Here are some ideas to get you started.

Margarita Theme

The first thing that probably comes to mind when someone says Cinco de Mayo is probably margaritas. While the classic margarita is our personal favorite, there are so many different flavors you can add to spice things up. For this basket, you want the gift recipient to be able to try different versions. You will need:

A bottle of tequila – There is such an extensive collection of margaritas out there. Pick one that you’ve never tried before!

  • Classic margarita mix
  • Different fruit juices like mango or grapefruit
  • Salt for the rim
  • Margarita glasses
  • Limes

Delicious gourmet snacks they can have with the margaritas like Capeachio’s artisan crackers or camembert wheel.

Mini Margarita Favors

Here’s a great idea for a margarita themed party favor. Give each guest one margarita glass (I got this one from Dollar Tree) and a mini bottle of tequila. Top with a lime and a small packet of guacamole.

Tequila Tasting Theme

A slight variation on the margarita basket is a tequila-tasting basket. This is perfect for the person who doesn’t like mixed drinks. Get a variety of top shelf tequilas and then have fun trying them all. Definitely include shot glasses! While tequila is the most popular Mexican spirit, you can also include Mezcal, Charanda, or smooth rums.

Beer Theme

For your beer lover, create a basket that lets them try a variety of Mexican beers.

Include Corona, Modelo, Dos Equis, Sol, Victoria, or Tecate. Don’t forget to include limes. Make sure your basket is sturdy enough to hold the heavy bottles of beer.

Guacamole Theme

If the recipient is not a drinker, a guacamole theme is a great option. Fill the basket with all the ingredients needed to make fresh guacamole. Find a recipe online, and purchase the veggies needed. Print out that recipe and place it inside the basket. You will most likely need avocados, lime, onions, and peppers. You can also include kitchen gifts such as a cutting board, kitchen towel, or a masher. Add a tag that says β€œHoly Guacamole”.

Taco Theme

But the elegant hors d’oeuvres aside for now. A basket filled with taco ingredients is delicious and convenient and a great gift basket for taco night. The basket will need taco shells (hard and soft), salsa, guacamole, and taco seasoning. This theme is great for a family because there is no additional cost for an easy dinner. Only add refrigerated items like ground beef and shredded cheese if you can keep the basket in the fridge or pack it right before you give it to the recipient. Bonus item: include little taco holders so they don’t fall over when preparing.

Nacho Theme

This delightful basket is really simple and delicious because all you need are tortilla chips and nacho cheese dip. As upgrade options, try different brands of tortilla chips with big corn flavour or make your own cheese dip. Add a tag that says β€œNacho Average Basket”

Hot Sauce Theme

If the recipient is a hot sauce lover then why not give a basket with different hot sauce flavors? They can have fun trying them on different types of food.

You can also combine any and all of these items together to make a large basket. For example, nachos and margarita mix make the perfect pairing. Note that Mexico is typically not a wine-drinking country so you should stay away from including a bottle of wine, gourmet cheeses, or chocolate truffles in your basket. These are all items that make a great wine gift though! If you prefer a cheese platter gift set, just combine it with tequila instead of decadent wine.

Here are some more fun Cinco de Mayo gift ideas that you can also include inside the gift baskets. This is a great way to make sure your basket feels nice and full.
